Cyclone Seroja in 2021 caused massive damage to the corals in the waters of Lefuliao Village, Kupang District, East Nusa Tenggara Province, and also severely affected the small-scale fishing industry, on which 1,200 villagers depend, and the tourism industry, which has more than 20,000 tourists per year.
The project worked closely with the local government and community to conduct a biodiversity baseline survey and community talks to understand the damage to coral reefs and community development in the area, and to formulate conservation actions. The project also engaged 40 local fishermen through capacity building training, set up 45 coral reef restoration devices, transplanted 675 coral restorations, and carried out community capacity building as well as continuous monitoring to improve the community's Coral reef restoration and management capacity to enhance the resilience of coastal communities.
