Initiated by Society of Entrepreneurs and Ecology (SEE), the 100 Million Suosuo Project aims to establish a platform for participation from relevant government authorities in Alxa Prefecture of Inner Mongolia, local herders and cooperatives, civil environmental organisations, to entrepreneurs and the general public. It is expected to create the synergy for the restoration of 133,333 hectares of desert vegetation by planting 100 million psammophytes (mainly represented by suosuo) in the critical eco-regions in Alxa over the decade from 2014 to 2023. The local ecological environment will hence be improved and the expansion of deserts contained. Meanwhile, the derived economic value of these suosuo trees will also help raise the local herders’ living standards. By June 2019, a total of 76,466 hectares of suosuo and other psammophytes have been planted. Among these, 37,533 hectares of vegetation were planted and sustained from 2014 to 2017, while the remaining 38,933 hectares are still in growing season awaiting inspection.
