71% of the surface of the blue planet we live on is ocean. As the largest ecosystem on Earth, the blue ocean provides a variety of ecosystem services for humans, including food supply, livelihood employment, natural products, tourism and recreation, biodiversity, clean water, carbon sinks and climate change response. In particular, coastal habitats can provide surrounding communities with ecological security barriers such as wind and wave protection, disaster prevention and mitigation. However, with the rapid development of human society today, under the dual pressure of the impact of human activities and the impact of climate change, the ocean is facing an unprecedented crisis. The United Nations has designated the decade of 2021-2030 as the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration and Ocean Decade, calling on all sectors to take action to protect and repair the planet on which we depend for survival.
At the side event of the 2nd United Nations Ocean Conference in 2022, " Promoting Blue Partnership for a Shared Sustainable Future" officially released the "Blue Partnership Principles", which include 16 basic principles, clearly stating that on the basis of voluntariness and cooperation, we will jointly promote marine ecological protection and restoration, address climate change, prevent and control marine pollution, and sustainably utilize marine resources. In response to this initiative, the SEE Foundation and the Ant Foundation jointly launched a special fund for the " Blue Partnership Action ", dedicated to promoting international marine cooperation and supporting the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG14). The white paper "China's Marine Ecological and Environmental Protection" issued in 2024 also affirmed the achievements of the "Blue Partnership Fund" in promoting international cooperation in marine ecological protection.
The third United Nations Ocean Conference will be held in Nice, France in 2025, with the theme of "Accelerating Action and Mobilizing All to Protect and Sustainable Use the Ocean". In order to showcase and promote innovative practices, successful experiences and typical models in international cooperation under the Blue Partnership, we are planning to collect and publish small yet smart "Blue Partnership" Excellent Case Studies of Marine Ecological Protection and Restoration. By collecting excellent cases, we can enhance the influence of international cooperation and promote experience exchange and cooperation network building.
